260128006953 - Renewal of ECC for the Operation of Gravel (Base material) Mining activities for Oranjemund Town Council, /Karas region

Oranjemund is a unique, formerly closed diamond-mining town in southwestern Namibia, located at the mouth of the Orange River bordering South Africa. The area around Oranjemund has been regarded as a restricted area under the Declaration Diamond Area No.1 until withdraw by the Government Notice No. 97 of 2000. The mining of gravel or base material is one of the key activities of the town operations as it provides essential raw material (aggregates) for the construction industry and infrastructure development, such as roads and buildings. The Town Council in collaboration with NAMDEB has been conducting gravel mining activities for local infrastructure development in support of the "OMD 2030" initiative. OTC was issued with an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC00620) for the mining activities of gravel (base materials) with a valid period of 2020-05-11 to 2023-05-11. The gravel material is exhausted from the current borrow pits and a new mining area has been identified. To ensure continued operation of gravel mining activities in compliance with the Environmental Management Act, 07 of 2007 and other relevant legislations, OTC intends to apply for the renewal of the ECC.
