DETAILS OF THE ACTIVITY(S) COVERED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE: 2.1 Title of the Activity Crocodile Leather Processing and Training Centre Location of Activity The proposed site is situated adjacent to the B8 approximately 700 m west of Kongola on the eastern bank of the Kwando River in the Linyanti Constituency of the Zambezi Region of Namibia. 2.3 Nature of Activity The Project proposed is a captive crocodile breeding and tourism facility, known as the Manyeha Captive Crocodile Breeding & Tourism Facility. It will encompass both a commercial and eco-tourism “Crocodile” themed facility in the Kongola area of the Zambezi Region. The commercial aspect entails the production of wet salted crocodile skins, consisting of four basic steps namely the collection and incubation of crocodile eggs (September – November), followed by hatching of crocodiles (December – March) and then rearing before slaughter and skin preparation. The eco-tourism aspect accommodates day visitors providing the opportunity to view adult crocodiles and to learn about crocodiles and the Zambezi Region in an environment that is both unique and refreshing to the weary traveler. 2.4 Scale and Scope of the Activity The particular site was chosen given the good tourism visibility, easy access, proximity to essential services of water and electricity, a good crocodile aspect and proximity to the Kwando River. An additional positive feature of this site is that significant earthmoving has already been done on the site providing for a series of natural “crocodile” dams already existing. Likewise, the land is government owned. The entire facility will require ± 20ha of land. The facility will provide for an administrative component, a commercial component and eco-tourism component functioning as an integrated unit. The entire facility will be fenced with a 1.8m high perimeter security fence.
