In accordance with Section 27 of the Environmental Management Act, 2007 (Act No. 7 of 2007), the activity classified as “energy distribution, transmission and generation” is listed and therefore requires an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC). NamPower obtained an ECC in 2022 for the management and operation of the 220kV transmission lines between Omburu – Van Eck, Van Eck – Osona, and Osona – Omburu. NamPower hereby seeks to apply for the renewal of the Environmental Clearance Certificate for the continued management and operation of the aforementioned transmission lines and substation. This application is made to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Act and its associated regulations. The 220kV Omburu – Van Eck 2 and 220kV Van Eck – Osona – Omburu transmission lines were constructed in 1995 and 1972, respectively, and span approximately 165 km and 162.3 km in length. The transmission lines connect Omburu Substation to Van Eck Substation, with the 220kV Van Eck – Osona – Omburu line passing through Osona Substation. These lines traverse the Khomas, Otjozondjupa, and Erongo regions. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) associated with this application includes the Osona Substation, which occupies a footprint of approximately 18,120 m². The transmission lines are constructed using steel self-support lattice tower structures, designed to ensure durability and reliability in power transmission.
