Under the Section 27 of the Environmental Management Act (Act No. 7 of 2007), any activity related to energy generation, transmission, and distribution is classified as a listed activity. As such, it requires an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) prior to commencement or continuation. In 2022, NamPower obtained an ECC for the operation and maintenance of the 220 kV Harib – Kokerboom 1 & 2 transmission lines. These lines form part of NamPower’s national transmission network, facilitating electricity flow between the Harib and Kokerboom Substations in southern Namibia. NamPower therefore intends to apply for the renewal of the Environmental Clearance Certificate for the continued operation and maintenance of the 220 kV Harib – Kokerboom 1 & 2 transmission lines, in compliance with the Environmental Management Act and its associated regulations. The 220 kV Harib–Kokerboom 1 & 2 transmission lines span a total length of 236.8 kilometres. These lines run from the Harib Substation to the Kokerboom Substation, located north of Keetmanshoop in the //Karas Region. This Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) also includes the Harib Substation, which occupies a footprint of approximately 25,137 square metres. The transmission lines are constructed using steel self-supporting lattice tower structures.
