LISTED ACTIVITY ESIA SCREENING FINDING ENERGY GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND STORAGE ACTIVITIES (1). The construction of facilities for: (a) The generation of electricity; and (b) The transmission and supply of electricity. ● The lodge is connected to the NamPower Karas T-off substation. A 120 kilovolt amperes (kVa) back-up diesel generator is also in place in the event of power outage. ● Supplementary energy is supplied by ground-mounted solar arrays. WASTE MANAGEMENT, TREATMENT, HANDLING AND DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES (2.3) The import, processing, use and recycling, temporary storage, transit or export of waste. ● Different waste types are generated as a result of lodge operations. Waste is collected at a temporary waste storage yard, segregated into respective categories, such as recyclable and reusable waste, before being removed and disposed of off-site at a registered waste disposal site. TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (6) The construction of resorts, lodges, hotels or other tourism and hospitality facilities. ● The lodge comprises thirty (30) natural stone-built chalets, a reception with curio shop, restaurant, bar, kitchen, swimming pools, administration offices, workshop, laundry and staff accommodation. WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENTS (8.1) The abstraction of groundwater or surface water for industrial or commercial purposes. (8.6) Construction of industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants and related pipeline systems. ● Water for lodge operations is sourced from groundwater boreholes. Abstraction and water use licences (not currently in place) are required for this, which are approved by the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) in terms of the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2013. ● Wastewater is treated through an on-site wastewater treatment plant and is reused in the garden. The lodge currently does not have a licence for this wastewater treatment process. In terms of the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2013 and the Regulations of 2023, a waste treatment, effluent discharge and reuse licence issued by DWA is required for this biological treatment system.
