THE ECC IS FOR THE OPERATION, MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADE OF AN EXISTING GERUS - GERUS EARTH ELECTRODE LINE, STATION AND OTHER ASSOCIATED INFRASTRUCTURES IN OTJOZONDJUPA REGION. The purpose of the earth electrode line and stations is to provide a current path when the 350 HVDC line is operated on earth mode. The 350 HVDC line may be operated under certain conditions in “earth return” mode. The 350 HVDC line may be operated under certain conditions in “earth return” return due to significant savings in power losses. The electrode line connects the converter station to the grounding system. The electrode line connects the converter station to the grounding electrode. The operating voltage of the electrode line under normal conditions is less than 1kV. The electrode line is 38.3 km in length and runs from the converter station at the Gerus substation to the Gerus electrode station. The Gerus electrode station is located 38.3km southwest of Otjiwarongo on the Farm Patagonia no. 137. The electrode station is located on the 24 hectare NamPower land, however the station is not fully developed. Currently, only two of the eight electrodes have been installed, the remaining six are yet to be installed. Plans are underway to install the remaining six electrodes and associated infrastructures.
