241113004949 - The operation of an existing pig farm (farrow to finish), Mariental Piggery, located in Mariental, Hardap Region, Namibia.

Listed activities triggered by the project include: LISTED ACTIVITY EIA SCREENING FINDING ENERGY GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND STORAGE ACTIVITIES (1.a) The construction of facilities for the generation of electricity. (1.b) The construction of facilities for the transmission and supply of electricity. • A solar power plant and a battery storage facility exist on site, constructed prior to application. Energy is generated, transmitted and utilised (on site), in addition to the Municipal electrical supply. Should Mariental experience any electricity issues, the Project will be sustained by the solar power plant, as the operation and infrastructure is highly reliant thereon. WASTE MANAGEMENT, TREATMENT, HANDLING AND DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES (2.1) The construction of facilities for waste sites, treatment of waste and disposal of waste. (2.2) Any activity entailing a scheduled process referred to in the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Ordinance, 1976. • Domestic waste is removed and disposed of at the municipal waste disposal site in Mariental from septic tanks every two weeks. Two tanks have French drain soakaway systems installed. Licences will be applied for from the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) for the septic tank management and discharge requirements. • An incinerator will be constructed on site for solid waste and dead pig carcasses in the future. This will require a separate specialist air quality assessment study to be conducted. AGRICULTURE AND AQUACULTURE ACTIVITIES (7.5) Pest control. • Pest control products are used to control rodent infestation in and to prevent fly breeding WATER RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (8.6) Construction of industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants and related pipeline systems. (8.8) Construction and other activities within watercourses within flood lines. (8.9) Construction and other activities within a catchment area. • A borehole will be drilled downstream of the Project to identify and monitor contamination induced by the wastewater treatment works. • Surface water quality samples collected upstream of the Project, will be compared to samples collected downstream to determine the contamination ratio of the Piggery. • The Project falls within a catchment and flood plains east of the Fish River. Areas below 1096 m are prone to flooding, thus, stormwater and flood attenuation measures should be implemented. • The current wastewater management system will be updated. This includes building a second separator to reduce the solids in the final effluent. • Potential infrastructure developments will be constructed above the flood prone threshold of 1096 m. • A licence will be applied for from the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) for the current wastewater effluent treatment system management requirements. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE TREATMENT, HANDLING AND STORAGE (9.1) The manufacturing, storage, handling or processing of a hazardous substance defined in the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, 1974. (9.2) Any process or activity which requires a permit, licence or other form of authorisation, or the modification of or changes to existing facilities for any process or activity which requires an amendment of an existing permit, licence or authorisation or which requires a new permit, licence or authorisation in terms of a law governing the generation or release of emissions, pollution, effluent or waste. • An incinerator will be constructed on site for solid waste and dead pig carcasses in the future. This will require a separate specialist air quality assessment study to be conducted.
