241031004885 - Renewal of ECC for the proposed Construction, Operation and Maintenance of the new Keetmanshoop Dumpsite

Keetmanshoop town is widely recognized as the Capital of the South and serves as the administrative capital of //Karas region. . As such, the town attracting significant interest from the private and public investor from various industries accompanied by a fast-growing population which put pressure on municipal services. The town’s economic and population growth have put immense pressure on Municipal services amongst others is the solid waste management. The town’s existing disposal site has reached its full disposal capacity, and its locality has become a serious environmental concern due to its proximity to the newly developed townships. In line with the National Solid Waste Management Strategy and the Environmental Management Act, 07 of 2007, the Keetmanshoop Municipality has proposed to decommission the existing dumpsite and commission a new site. An EIA study was conducted in 2018 of which two candidate sites were identified within the Municipal town lands for possible location of the proposed disposal site. After a careful consideration and assessment, a suitable site measuring approximately 20ha and located about 8km east of the town CBD along the road to Aroab was selected. Environment Clearance Certificate ECC-01717, was obtained and expired in 2021. Due to economic downturn the Municipality was unable to commission the establishment of the new site as proposed during the validity period of the ECC. As such, the Municipality has now secured funding and is ready to start with the establishment of the new waste disposal site.
